Just enough research (information design edition)
How to construct a data story
From Amit Kapoor’s classes at NID
To make a good data story, you’d need just enough research to answer just enough questions that will cover just enough angles of any given issue.
Here’s how I’m breaking my issue down for a data story on invasive species in the Antarctic :
- The Main Problem is the big topic you want to form an understanding of
- You break it down into Sub-issues, the next logical lines of questioning that would arise when you look at the main problem
- Next you can take a look at the hunches, or hypotheses, you have about those sub-issues
- Which would then give you the granular, concrete questions you need to answer with data
Answering those questions will give us the ingredients we need to assemble a good story. If you don’t have everything you need, edit the issue tree and repeat the discovery process.
